“It was clear from the outset that The Spectator was really leading the coverage,” Summers told CNN by phone Monday. The photographs were captured by student journalists — including the cover image shot by freshman Stella Ragas — working in conjunction with New York photo director Jody Quon. Gathering reporting from campus for the issue, however, was not without its challenges for the student journalists. “There is significantly more trust of us than national outlets who parachute in and maybe don’t have the intimate knowledge,” Ramirez told CNN. In fact, when the encampments first propped up on campus, Ramirez told CNN that the student journalists were reluctant to retire for the night.

The photograph was released by Kensington Palace early Sunday on the couple’s official social media accounts, to mark Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day,” she wrote before ending her post with a “C” for Catherine. This year’s Mother’s Day photograph was also the first proper sighting of the princess since Christmas Day. Questions about the Mother’s Day image first emerged on social media. In the past, the family’s amateur photographs have been well received when posted on social media.

Like many top execs, Manowitz has focused on AI this year. "There's the excitement and wonderful opportunity that we see, but there's also a fear of the unknown," Manowitz said. He added, "There's not a single hotter-button pressing the creative community than authenticity." Naturally, we're thinking about how we can use AI to be a tool for creators and how we protect their rights.

Gruesome photographs of Palestinian children killed in rocket strikes and Israeli infants murdered by terrorists. Digitally doctored images that whip around social media before they can be verified. Accusations — since rejected by multiple news outlets — that photojournalists had advance knowledge of the Hamas surprise attack on Oct. 7. “In every war, there is a war of narratives,” said Jonathan Levy, the executive editor of Sky News. Among the factors is how much horror a viewer or reader can tolerate, and whether an image sensationalizes or trivializes violence.

The photograph tells us nothing about whether or how these children are related. Hundreds of Israeli hostages, including children, are believed to be held in Gaza by Hamas, their families desperate for their safe release. It is a rare thing for mainstream news organizations to publish graphic images of dead or wounded children. There is nothing quite so devastating as the image of a child whose life has been snuffed out by senseless violence. And so the slaughter in Maine reminded me of another image from Gaza, one you may have seen on social media.

HonestReporting's Gil Hoffman told Reuters his organisation had not claimed to know that there had been any prior knowledge by the news groups of the Hamas attack. "I was so relieved when all four of the media organisations said they didn't have prior knowledge," Hoffman said in an interview by telephone about the article. "I still very much think that the questions were legitimate and the answers were adequate from the media organisations themselves." Reacting to the HonestReporting article posted on X, the Israeli Foreign Ministry had described the use of the various images by the four news groups as "a serious violation of journalistic ethics." Despite HonestReporting's suggestions that the Palestinian photojournalists had secured their images in coordination with Hamas, he said he was "happy" their pictures had been published.

HonestReporting, which describes itself as an organization devoting to fighting media disinformation about Israel and Zionism, did not specifically make those accusations against the companies. It did, however, suggest that freelance photographers whose work from that day was used by the outlets might have known. For journalists to have known about the Hamas plans in advance presents a complicated ethical question. “We raised questions and it led the media outlets to clarify the truth,” he said. “Great, that's what we do.”Both AP and CNN said Thursday that they would no longer work with Eslaiah, one of the freelance photographers.

“It is reckless to make those allegations, putting our journalists on the ground in Israel and Gaza at risk,” the statement said. The furor over the Gaza photographers is part of a broader information war that has raged alongside the actual war. But it said in a statement that it was no longer working with Mr. Eslaiah, who filed the earliest and most extensive photos of the attack. There were other red flags about Mr. Eslaiah. He said he had no advance knowledge of the attack and had no links to Hamas, despite the photo with Mr. Sinwar.

“The first pictures AP received from any freelancer show they were taken more than an hour after the attacks began. In a statement, CNN said Eslaiah was not working for the network on the day of the attack. “We had no prior knowledge of the October 7th attacks,” a CNN spokesperson said. A member of Israel’s war cabinet, Benny Gantz, also used the report to question whether journalists had prior knowledge of the attack. The Committee to Protect Journalists denounced the Israeli government’s rhetoric, warning it could put media workers in harm’s way.

After Hamas, which controls Gaza, attacked Israel on Oct. 7, photographers documented moments of mourning and later, mobilization. Israel retaliated by bombarding Gaza with airstrikes; a photographer in the Gaza City neighborhood of Al-Nasr captured images of children looking toward the sky, fearing aerial attacks. Over the past two weeks, the photojournalism of The New York Times has relayed the horror and human cost of the conflict. Oct. 9, 2023 | A Palestinian man smokes a cigarette as he looks at the ruins of the Ahmed Yassin mosque, which was leveled by Israeli airstrikes, in Gaza City. After months of mounting tension and civil unrest, Hamas militants carried out a surprise, multi-front attack on Israel on Oct. 7th. Hamas fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified Israeli border in several locations, killing hundreds of civilians and taking hostages. In response, Israel formally declared war against the Palestinian militant group, increased airstrikes on Gaza, and sealed it off from food, fuel, and other supplies – escalating a deadly conflict that has claimed hundreds of lives on both sides.

Brazil’s Congress opened an inquiry into the matter, which will eventually produce a written report and may suggest that prosecutors bring criminal charges. The committee has called former Bolsonaro aides to testify about an alleged conspiracy to overturn electoral results which they have denied. Opposition lawmakers have sought to turn up evidence that the government was to blame for the rioting because it failed to provide adequate security in the capital. Some opposition lawmakers have focused on a portion of security footage showing him taking pictures to suggest the scenes were staged. “We’re here today at an anti-climax, listening to a working journalist who was taking photographs,” said pro-government lawmaker Rogerio Correia.

Opinion What a Motherless Son Knows About FatherhoodWhen I was 8, maybe 9 years old, there was a day when students in my class could bring their parents to school. I’ve no memory of this proclamation of my paternal dreams, but I know I’ve long perceived fatherhood as a noble pursuit. My father-figure admiration likely originated from watching my dad, flummoxed by grief, in the years after the plane crash in which my mother died at age 37. My older brother, Brandon, age 6, and my identical twin, Spencer, were on the same plane sitting right beside her. The film fastidiously re-enacts the events of the plane crash and its immediate aftermath.
